Poety Workshop - Poetry of Langston Hughes

Mary Azrael

On Wednesday, May 7, from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at the Oakland Library, poet Mary Azrael will present a workshop focusing on the works of Langston Hughes. Details will be published in April.

Voices and Visions, a free poetry workshop, will be held at the Oakland Library on Wednesday, May 7, from 6:30 – 8 p.m., with Baltimore area poet Mary Azrael. Her workshops feature a multi-media approach to modern American poetry that includes readings, discussions, music, and excerpts from the PBS Voices & Visions series. This particular workshop will focus on Langston Hughes. “He has been called ‘the poet laureate of African America’ and is one of our most popular poets,” notes Azrael. “A passionate social commentator influenced by the blues and jazz, Walt Whitman and Carl Sandburg, Hughes is a true poet of the people.”

Mary Azrael is the author of three books of poems and the libretto for an opera, Lost Childhood, performed last summer in Tel Aviv. Her poems have appeared in many literary journals. She has taught writing in several Maryland colleges and was a Maryland State Arts Council Poet in the Schools for 25 years. She currently teaches poetry writing workshops in the Odyssey Program at Johns Hopkins University and co-edits Passager Books and Passager Magazine, which publishes memoir, poetry and short fiction by writers over 50. The mission of Passager Press is to give voice to the passion and imagination of older writers. The Oakland Library now has the recent issue of Passager Magazine on display.

This program is part of Poetry’s Here @ Your Maryland Library, a Maryland Center for the Book program that brings poets and poetry to Maryland public libraries. The Maryland Center for the Book is a program of the Maryland Humanities Council. Poetry’s Here is funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, LSTA grant funds, through the Division of Library Development & Services, Maryland State Department of Education.
