Tail Waggin' Tutors   4:30 PM - 6:30 PM  Children Services
Branch: Grantsville
Come join us after school on the first and third Monday of each month and read to a friendly dog! Bring a favorite book with you or find a new favorite in the library.

Therapy Dogs International’s “Tail Waggin’ Tutors” program encourages children to read by providing a non-judgmental listener and furry friend to read to that won’t laugh at them if they make a mistake or stumble over a word, but rather lie next to them and enjoy the story being read to them. The children learn to associate reading with being with the dog, and begin to view reading in a positive way. Over time, the child’s reading ability and confidence can improve because they are practicing their skills, which will make them enjoy reading even more.

No registration is required. Parents are asked to remain in the library while the child is reading with the dogs.

This program will not take place on days when the Garrett County school system is closed or closes early due to inclement weather.

The Ruth Enlow Library will participate in the 2015 Maryland STEM Festival with official events scheduled at all local libraries in November. “Join us for hands-on creation experiences at the library,” says Children’s Specialist Julie Iden. “Come and explore storytelling and learn about the science and technology behind stopmotion. At all locations except Kitzmiller, students will work in teams to create their own short stopmotion films using the Lego Movie Maker app. By the end of the class, each team will have produced their very own movie complete with dialog and sound effects.”

“The Maryland STEM Festival is about bringing the wonders and fun of STEM to every Maryland resident,” said Phil Rogofsky, Festival director. “There will be something for each and every person to be excited about.”

“Founded in 2014, the Maryland STEM Festival joins a growing trend of regional STEM and science festivals in the United States,” notes a library spokesperson.  “During a 10-day celebration, the festival will bring over 100 events – hosted by schools, colleges, libraries, museums, parks, businesses, and other community organizations – together under one banner to recognize the economic, educational, and cultural impact of STEM in Maryland.”  For more information about the festival, visit www.marylandSTEMfestival.org.
