Welcome to Story Time @ the library! This program is geared for children ages 3-5. Come join us as we look, listen, sing, and play while learning through stories, crafts, and other fun activities.
LapSit  10:30 AM - 11:00 AM  Children Services
Branch: Oakland Meeting Room
A children's program designed especially for babies and toddlers (children birth to 36 months).  LapSit is a special program that incorporates singing, rhymes, stories, and other activities that will entertain and stimulate children’s language skills.  A parent or caregiver must stay with the child for the program.

The Accident Library will hold Children's Story Time Tuesdays Sept-May (with some exceptions) from 11-12 PM. Children's Story Time is open to children ages 3-5. We read a story, make a craft, and do activities. 

If school in Garrett County is cancelled due to weather, then Story Time will be cancelled. If there is a weather delay, Story Time will meet as scheduled.

  Children's Hour is a program for preschoolers ages 3-5, held on Wednesdays from 10:30am to 11:30am, September through May.  Children's Hour promotes creative expression, social skills, listening comprehension, nutrition, and school readiness and includes STEM activities, stories, games, experiments, music and crafts.

Come join us for books, crafts and other activities that build early literacy skills and a love of reading! 

Story Time will not take place on days that the Garrett County School system closes due to inclement weather. In the event of a delay in the school system, Story Time will take place as usual.

Teen Book Club  5:30 PM - 6:30 PM  Teen Services

The Teen Book Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month.  Newcomers are welcomeThe book for Nov. is Flirting in Italian by Lauren Henderson. Participants will receive a free copy of the book. 

The Accident Teen Book Club is open to 12-18 year olds. We meet the first Weds. of each month (Sept-May) from 5:30-6:30PM (unless otherwise noted) at the Accident Library. Participants of the club receive a free copy of the book. You can choose to only register for the books you want to read.

Story Tails  11:00 AM - 12:00 PM  Children's/Teens

This month we will have Gipper here with us for StoryTails: Children Reading to Dogs. This drop-in program is designed to help children develop confidence in reading.  Each child reads to a dog for about 15 minutes with the dog's handler sitting nearby to give reading assistance if necessary.  All dogs are certified by Therapy Dogs International. At the end of the reading session, each child will receive a bookmark with a picture of the dog that they read to.  This program provides a great opportunity for kids who need to work on reading skills and would like the opportunity to read to an animal.

HomeSchoolers @ the Library typically meets on the first Friday of the month September- November and January- May. Our volunteer presenters offer a wide variety of enrichment programs for home school children and their families. Pre-registration is required. Space is limited.

Park Ranger, Jim Riley from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources will present this month's "Animal Tracks" program.

Today's program is an official Maryland STEM Festival event. . Participants will discover how to identify and interpret animal tracks.Dress for a mess because each child will make their own track imprints.

The Maryland STEM Festival provides inspirational, educational, and accessible programming in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) throughout Maryland. Through a week of collaborative, interactive, and dynamic events and activities throughout the state, the Festival displays Maryland's STEM success and further connects the current and future leaders in STEM.

Do you have treasures or memorabilia from World War I? Or perhaps family stories about the war? Come out to our scanning event at the Oakland Library and bring your items and/or stories. Jill Craig from Western Maryland Regional Library/Western Maryland Historical Library will be here to lead us in a discussion of local stories about the war and scan the items you bring for digitization. Our genealogy specialist Venessa Stacy will be here as well. All digital scanning is free and you'll receive a digital copy of your memorabilia by email.

Celebrate Maryland STEM Festival by exploring our STEM Lab. For this special event, our meeting room will be transformed into a lab space where children ages 6 to 13 can explore a variety of activities including electrical circuits, coding, Osmo, Makey Makey, Ozobot, stop motion animation, and geometric Christmas ornaments.

Young Readers Book Club is a book discussion group for readers in grades 6 through 8.  The group meets on the third Tuesday of each month from September through November and January through May.
 
You must be pre-registered to attend this program.
 
Students will be provided with books that they will read and discuss with the group.  They will also enjoy a craft, game, or activity and a snack based upon themes relevant to the particular book selected for the program.

Lego Club is designed for children ages 4-12 and features free building time with lots of building bricks. Children are encouraged to build a creation based on a new theme each month. Staff may photograph and/or display completed builds in the library.

Lego Club typically meets on the fourth Monday of the month from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. and registration is required.

This month's theme is Zoo/Animals.
