Branch: Oakland Meeting Room
A children's program designed especially for babies and toddlers (children age three and under).  LapSit is a special program that incorporates singing, rhymes, stories, and other activities that will entertain and stimulate children’s language skills.  A parent or caregiver must stay with the child for the program.

Children will enjoy an hour of stories, crafts, & activities on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 12 noon.  This program is geared towards children ages 3-5.  Come join the fun!

Kids Book Club is a book discussion group for children ages six through eight.  Programs are held on the fourth Tuesday of every month from September through November and January through May.
 
You must be pre-registered to attend this program.
 
Students will be provided with books that they will read and discuss with the group.  They will also enjoy a craft or other fun activity and have a snack based on the themes relevant to the book selection for that month.  If interested please contact Julie Iden at 301-334-3996 ext. 104.

This week we will have Maggie here with us for StoryTails: Children Reading to Dogs.  This drop-in program is designed to help children develop confidence in reading.  Each child reads to a dog for about 15 minutes with the dog's handler sitting nearby to give reading assistance if necessary.  All dogs are certified by Therapy Dogs International. At the end of the reading session, each child will receive a bookmark with a picture of the dog that they read to.  This program provides a great opportunity for kids who need to work on reading skills and would like the opportunity to read to an animal.

The Friendsville Library will offer free “Fun with iPad” classes on Wednesday, February 12th and 19th from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m., with Karen Wood of the University of Maryland Extension Office. February 14th is not only Valentine's Day. It is also International Book Giving Day- a day dedicated to getting new, used, and borrowed books in the hands of as many children as possible. In celebration of this event, the Oakland library invites its young patrons to visit anytime between 9:15 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Friday, February 14th to select a free book and bookmark, and share why they love visiting the library with Julie Iden, Oakland's new Children's Specialist.
 
The website for International Book Giving Day at http://bookgivingday.com/ lists a number of ideas for how individuals can celebrate this day and share books with youngsters.

Therapy Dog Mollie will be here along with her owner Amanda Fischetti for StoryTails: Children Reading to Dogs on Saturday, February 15, at 11 a.m. This program is designed to help children develop confidence in reading. Join us for a series of free gardening classes at the Grantsville Library, presented by the Garrett County Master Gardeners from the University of Maryland Extension Office. All classes are free and open to the public. February 18 is the first class and the topic is Planning Your Garden. Attendance at the entire series is not required.
