This month we will have Maggie and MacKenzie here with us for StoryTails: Children Reading to Dogs.  This drop-in program is designed to help children develop confidence in reading.  Each child reads to a dog for about 15 minutes with the dog's handler sitting nearby to give reading assistance if necessary.  All dogs are certified by Therapy Dogs International. At the end of the reading session, each child will receive a bookmark with a picture of the dog that they read to.  This program provides a great opportunity for kids who need to work on reading skills and would like the opportunity to read to an animal

A children's program designed especially for babies and toddlers (children age three and under).  LapSit is a special program that incorporates singing, rhymes, stories, and other activities that will entertain and stimulate children’s language skills.  A parent or caregiver must stay with the child for the program.

This program is designed to provide a space for adults to work on handcrafts and share tips and ideas.  The library provides the Oakland meeting room as the space, and participants bring their own portable projects and, if desired, a brown bag lunch. Examples of portable projects include, but are not limited to, knitting, beadwork, origami, quilting, scrapbooking, drawing, needlework, and crocheting. Participants can attend for the entire three hours or drop in for a short while.

Songs and Stories of the Pioneers  9:15 AM - 10:15 PM  Children Services

Dressed in period clothing, around a "campfire at sunset", Matthew takes listeners back in time to the days of the men and women, the trappers, explorers, the the pioneers, the Indians, the folks going west in covered wagons, the prospectors, and the Alamo, with songs and stories from the time of  from the Lewis and Clark expedition up to the beginning of the cowboy era.  Matthew sings and plays guitar, banjo, harmonica, mandolin and Indian drum. Pre-registration is not required.

Matthew Dodd will be presenting his program, Songs and Stories for Around a Campfire featuring campfire songs through the years-- one the pioneers would have sung, one Civil war soldiers would have sung, one from the cowboys, a Boy Scout song, a Girl Scout song, a church camp song, plus several other classic camp songs like "Found a Peanut" and a musical tribute to s'mores! The stories are short intros to each song that puts the song in context. The stage is very elaborate with a backdrop that looks like a night sky, a working campfire, and trees. This is a great program for families with children of all ages. Pre-registration is not required.

Dressed in period clothing, around a "cowboy campfire at sunset", Matthew takes listeners back in time to the days of the pioneers, the cowboys, the lawmen, the gunfighters and the Indians who made the  Old West the most romantic and fascinating era of American history.  Using traditional Western songs, true stories and tall tales, plus many, many fascinating little-known facts, Matthew brings the Old West back to life once more.  You'll feel like you were really there!  Matthew sings and plays guitar, banjo, harmonica, mandolin and concertina.

STEM Kids is designed for children ages 6 to13 on days when school is released early for staff development. STEM kids features a variety of activities that focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Pre-registration is required for this event, as spaces are limited.

STEM Kids will be cancelled and not rescheduled if Garrett County Public Schools are cancelled or delayed.
