Choose Civility Discussion

This month’s Choose Civility discussion will be held on Monday, July 15, 2019 from 6:00pm-7:00pm at the Oakland library. Set to be on the topic of race, it will also include a guest moderator. Lynn Groesbeck Bowman is a member of Maryland’s Commission on African American History and Culture, as well an associate professor of English and Speech at Allegany College of Maryland. In 2011, in response to the deficiencies she saw in Western Maryland’s diversity education, she began to research the area’s African American history through primary documents and first-person interviews. Her research has led to four books and regular lectures in Western Maryland, northern West Virginia and southwestern Pennsylvania. Through Bowman’s work, local African American history has also been incorporated into the curriculum of a variety of Frostburg State University departments. Join us as we discuss this topic and what it means to us today.
