The Bayeux Tapestry

The Ruth Enlow Library will host a lecture about The Bayeux Tapestry by artist and designer Dolores M. Andrew. The lecture is scheduled for Monday, November 13 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at the Oakland Library and is free and open to the public. To register for this event, contact Bonnie at 301-334-3996 x0117 or bonnie@relib.net.

“The Bayeux Tapestry, which was stitched over 900 years ago to commemorate the Battle of Hastings, is not actually a tapestry, but a very old embroidery,” noted Andrew.  “In 58 colorful scenes, the Embroidery tells the story of events leading up to the meeting of English King Harold and his cousin William of Normandy in battle in 1066. The Embroidery is located in Bayeux, a small town about 20 miles from the Normandy Beachheads, and is the major attraction of that community.”

Andrew will share details about the Embroidery, which she examined on a visit there, along with observations about the stitches, the central characters, and the eleventh century world that created this 230 foot-long masterpiece. “Since I am an embroiderer, said Andrew, “many of my points will be from the angle of a stitcher. I'll share my scale model of the whole embroidery at the end of the talk, in addition to other visuals.”

Andrew creates work in a variety of media in both the fine art and needle art disciplines. She holds a BFA in painting from Syracuse University and an MFA in Art Education from Maryland Institute College of Art. Her work is displayed in several galleries and has been accepted in juried shows throughout the United States, with both large works and miniatures. She is a Charter, as well as a Signature Member of the Maryland Pastel Society. A retired Associate Professor of Art from Essex Community College in Baltimore County, Maryland, Andrew spends the summers in Rehoboth Beach, where she has been on the summer faculty of the Rehoboth Art League for over 30 years.

Andrew also received certification as a Master Teacher of embroidery from the National Academy of Needlearts (NAN), is a NAN Certified Master Judge, and received the NAN   Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. She currently serves as the Mentor for Master Judging Certification for NAN. Andrew has written and illustrated three books on textile subjects, all published by Stemmer House Publishers.

Support for this program is provided by the Western Maryland Regional Library, the regional resource center for the public libraries of Allegany, Garrett, and Washington Counties.
