RAA and Dr. Seuss' Birthday

Join us as we celebrate Read Across America and the birthday of Dr. Seuss in March. Read Across America, an initiative of the National Education Association (NEA), is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on, or near, March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss, and throughout the month of March.

“Get ready to grab your hat and read with the Cat in the Hat on Monday, March 3, 2014 for the 17th annual Read Across America Day,” notes the NEA. “The Seussical celebration will kick off a week of reading across the nation as NEA members gather students, parents, and community members together to share their love of reading.”

We are celebrating with several events, and each child attending will receive a free book, funded by the Garrett County Education Association and the Friends of the Ruth Enlow Library.

The Oakland Library, in partnership with the Garrett County Judy Center, will host a Dr. Seuss Party on Monday, March 3 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. for children ages 3 – 8 years. Registration is required and limited to the first 50 children. To register, contact Julie at 301-334-3996 x104 or julie@relib.net. The event will feature three activity stations, each with a story and activity based on a Dr. Seuss book. Refreshments will be provided.

The Accident Library will give away free books to children on Monday, March 3 and Tuesday, March 4, and Dr. Seuss books will be featured at Story Hour on Tuesday, March 4 from 11 a.m. - Noon.

The Grantsville Library will celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday with stories, crafts, and puppy love on Monday, March 3 from 6:30 – 7:15 p.m. for children ages 1 – 10 years. For more information, contact Sandra at 301-895-5298 or sandra@relib.net.

At Kitzmiller, after-school students will celebrate by reading stories, making crafts, and playing games on Monday, March 3 from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served. On Tuesday, March 4, the 3 - 5 year-olds will enjoy stories, crafts, and other activities from 10:30 – 11 a.m. For more information, contact Diane at 301-453-3368 or diane@relib.net.

Beginning Monday, March 3, the Friendsville Library will celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday with a walk-in program of crafts and Dr. Seuss DVDs available to view in the library. For more information, contact Michele at 301-746-5663 or michele@relib.net.

In conjunction with the NEA initiative, the state of Maryland encourages students, parents, and teachers to share the experience of reading with its “30 minutes for 30 days” challenge during the month of March. Reading logs and details about the state program are available at http://www.readacrossmaryland.org/, and printed reading logs are available at all branches of the library. Students can post reading experiences online and enter a contest for a Kindle Fire and/or $25 Amazon gift card. The statewide contest is limited to students enrolled in K-12 Maryland public schools.
