One Maryland One Book Discussions
Discussions at Accident and Oakland

The Ruth Enlow Library is pleased to participate in this year’s One Maryland One Book project – a program designed to bring diverse groups of Marylanders together in library, school, or community settings to share a common reading experience by discussing a work of literature and participating in related events. Two book discussions are scheduled at local libraries: one at the Accident Library on Thursday, September 10, from 5:30 – 7 p.m., and another at the Oakland Library on Monday, October 5 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public. Registration is required by contacting Crystal at the Accident Library (301-746-8792 or crystal@relib.net) or Bonnie at the Oakland Library (301-334-3996, x117 or bonnie@relib.net).

This year’s selected book – The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Olympics by Daniel James Brown – tells the forgotten, yet compelling and true story of the University of Washington’s 1936 eight-oar varsity rowing team, a group of working class boys who defeated crews from eastern and British universities to go on to the Berlin Olympics and win the gold. The book also focuses on the team members, especially the heartwarming story of Joe Rantz – a “teenager without family or prospects,” notes Penguin Books, “who rows not for glory but to gain control over his life and build a stable future for his family.”

The boys “struggle to find confidence and rhythm against the brutal backdrop of America during the Great Depression. Brown vividly depicts the rowing experience, from the burn of every oar pull to the philosophies of master boat craftsman George Pocock. In the end, the boys’ comradery conquers self-doubt and catapults the team to glory on the 1936 Olympics’ world stage,” reads a Booklist Starred review.

More information about Brown’s gripping and inspiring book and a schedule of the author tour in Maryland are available at this link.

The discussions at both Accident and Oakland will be facilitated by Krista McKenzie, Instructional and Reference Librarian at Garrett College. A former children’s specialist and branch manager for the Ruth Enlow Library, McKenzie earned her Bachelor of Science in English, Philosophy, and Secondary Education from Frostburg State University in 2001. Several years later, she achieved her Master’s in Education and an MBA from FSU, and in 2010, a Master’s in Library and Information Science from Drexel University. A member of the American Library Association and the Maryland Library Association, McKenzie has presented at the local, state, and national levels and is a board member of the Young Adult Library Services Association.
One Maryland One Book is Maryland’s only statewide community reading project and is the signature program of the Maryland Center for the Book at the Maryland Humanities Council. Initiated in fall 2008, this year-long project culminates with two months of public programs, using literature to spur conversations in communities around the state. “We are delighted to be a part of the One Maryland One Book program again this year,” said Library Director Cathy Ashby. “Our experience last year was very rewarding, and we are eager to offer another quality program to our community.”
