Summer Reading Club: Books, Crafts and Fun

Local Libraries Rock with Summer Reading Club 2018

Summer Reading Club 2018 – with the theme of “Libraries Rock!” – is in full swing at Garrett County libraries. “Our libraries rock with events such as music camp, bucket drumming, sing and sign, nature sounds, Karaoke dance party, meeting local musicians, and more” says Thomas Vose, Director of the Ruth Enlow Library. Children can participate in the reading club by completing a log of books they read during the summer and/or attending events.

Regularly scheduled Summer Reading Club programs are held throughout July at local Ruth Enlow Library branches. All programs are free, and children choose their own reading materials and track their progress using the reading logs provided. Completed reading logs are entered into prize drawings at local library branches.

Participants can register online at this link. Dates at all branches are as follows:

  • Accident—Wednesdays from July 11 – 25, 11:00 a.m. – noon, all ages
  • Friendsville—Wednesdays from July 11 – 25, walk-in programs during normal operating hours, all ages
  • Grantsville—Wednesdays from July 11 – 25, 11:00 a.m. – noon, all ages
  • Kitzmiller—Fridays from July 13 – 27, 10:30 - 11:30 a.m., all ages
  • Oakland—Weekly from July 10 – 25, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m., ages 6 and up on Tuesdays, 3 – 5 year-olds on Wednesdays.

Summer Reading Club is a cooperative project between the local Maryland public libraries and the Maryland State Department of Education’s Division of Library Development and Services. The state also is a member of the Collaborative Summer Library Program, a grassroots consortium of states working together to provide high-quality summer reading program materials for children at the lowest cost possible for their public libraries.

The Friends of the Ruth Enlow Library contributes significant funds towards the library’s summer reading program, and the Garrett County Education Association provides free books for participants. Other local organizations and businesses support the program as well with incentives. And statewide, the Baltimore Orioles and the Maryland Science Center contribute tickets and passes to participating libraries.
